Finding the right surgeon can be a daunting prospect. Maybe you’ve been struggling with knee pain for a while now. Perhaps you’ve been told you could need a knee replacement but you’re really uncertain. You’re nervous about taking the next steps. What should you look for?
Wherever you go, the key thing is to find a practice that’s prepared to listen carefully, treat you as an individual, and help you feel comfortable about what comes next. Most knee surgery is elective: meaning, you choose to have it. Or not have it. (And, quite often, not having surgery is the right approach.)
So how do we do that here at Chris Bailey Orthopaedics? Here are six things we aim to provide for you.
A human touch
It’s normal to feel nervous when you see a consultant. Most people do! So we want to put you at ease when you come here. We have a very friendly team (see below!) and we’ll take time to listen to you and make our explanations clear to understand. Part of that involves helping you to weigh up the pros and cons of treatment. We’ll never push you towards surgery if conservative options are available. It’s also about your aftercare. If you do have surgery, we’ll give you a number to call if you have any issues or worries afterwards. We want the experience to be as comfortable and personal as possible.
Depth of expertise
We’ve been working with knee patients for over 25 years now, both privately and for the NHS. Which means that, whatever issues or complications you’re facing with your knee, we’ll make sure you get the right treatment for it. Mr Bailey specialises in total and partial knee replacements. In fact he recently completed his 2,500th replacement operation (both the regular surgery and the new robotic technique). But he treats and manages a wide range of other knee conditions, including ligament injuries, meniscal tears, knee fractures, alignment issues and Baker’s Cyst.
Convenient clinics
If you live in or near Hampshire in the UK, you’re not far from one of our clinics. We’re based in two locations: Sarum Road Hospital in Winchester SO22 5HA (part of Circle Health Group) and the Wessex Hospital in Chandler’s Ford SO53 2DW (run by Nuffield Health). We offer a range of weekly surgeries to suit your schedule:
Sarum Road – alternate Tuesdays (8:30am-12:30pm); every Wed (5:30pm-8pm); alternate Fri (8:30am-12:30pm)
Wessex – alternate Tue (8:30am-12:30pm); every Thu (1:30pm-5:30pm)
Easy-to-book scans
Getting a diagnosis, or investigating arthritis damage and unexplained pain, often involves a scan. To get one, you need a referral from a medical professional, like your GP. But we can streamline the process by referring you here in the clinic, then helping you arrange the booking. It’s often possible to have your scan the same day as your consultation. Just take your referral form to the hospital imaging department and ask if they have a slot available. (For more detail on x-rays, MRIs and more, see Getting a knee scan with Chris Bailey Orthopaedics.)
5-star feedback
If you read online reviews before booking a private consultation, you’re in good company. Surveys suggest over 70% of us scroll through independent patient reviews before we make that important call. We’re always glad to read what patients say about their treatment with us, and we’d encourage you to look through the latest feedback. To save you googling, you can find Mr Bailey’s reviews at three of the main sites here: IWantGreatCare (IWGC), Doctify and Top Doctors. At time of writing, we have 400+ five-star reviews on IWGC.
A fantastic team!
Mr Bailey may be our consultant surgeon, but he’s just one part of the first-class team that will care for you here. If you have questions or need help with anything – scans, appointments, insurance queries and more – our Secretaries Anita and Claire will be delighted to hear from you. You can read more about them, and our anaesthetist colleagues Dr Arthur Goldsmith and Dr Stephen Townley, on our Meet the Team page. We also need to mention the nursing teams at the Wessex and Sarum Road hospitals. As you’ll read in many of the patient reviews, they are genuinely exceptional.
Review the Reviewers: 3 recent pieces of feedback
“I can only describe my experience at the Nuffield with Chris Bailey and his team as EXCELLENT. Any questions I had were dealt with [with] patience and in detail. On leaving hospital, I was given phone numbers should I be worried about anything at all, which was very reassuring. I cannot thank everyone enough.” (May 2025)
“After my procedure, and while I was still in hospital, Mr Bailey came both days to see if I was comfortable. Which was very reassuring. I’m slowly getting used to walking without pain from my knee.” (Susan Jones, April 2025)
“Mr Bailey has such a nature that he is very easy to converse with and explains knee problems in layman’s terms. He has an excellent reputation and my complete knee replacement was performed very professionally.” (March 2025)
